Reconfigure.io joins the first space camp accelerator
Reconfigure.io is set to play an essential role in the UK’s vibrant spacetech ecosystem. With a new regulatory framework recently put in place by the UK government, commercial developments in spacetech are expanding. Startups and investors are poised to form new collaborations toward solutions here on earth as well as up in space. One commonality across these ventures is the need to analyse vast quantities of data. And that’s where Reconfigure.io steps in, providing the first platform to allow software teams to create application specific infrastructure, using hardware acceleration, to extract worth from big data.
What is space camp?
Seraphim capital are the first venture focussed entirely on financing companies operating in the spacetech ecosystem. Seraphim are growing companies who generate, apply and enhance the data gathered and driven by satellite and drone technology. Their aim is to “help the best spacetech startups secure funding, achieve scale, and foster close working relationships with industry leaders.”
Reconfigure.io were chosen by Seraphim’s investment team and partners: the new UK Space Agency, Dentons, Rolls-Royce, Cyient, European Space Agency, SA Catapult and Capital Enterprise as well as Airbus, SSTL and Telespazio, to be one of only six startups in the first cohort of their space-focussed accelerator. Spacecamp started in May and is ongoing.
Reconfigure.io have joined 5 other startups from the US, Denmark and the UK over this 9 week intensive program, geared towards being investment-ready in the space sector. Every aspect is covered, from market analysis and pitch refinement to product testing and metric development, with 1:1s and constant feedback cycles with heavy-weight industry leaders –the result is a refined focus, a wider network and readiness to scale up.
Space is getting closer to home
So why is this happening now? The cost of launching a satellite has dropped dramatically in recent years, to the point where startups are gravitating towards spacetech with terrestrial and space-based solutions . The number of businesses built around harnessing satellite and drone data, using their clear wide-reaching view of earth, has exploded. Space is a $350 billion industry encompassing many applications we rely on in our everyday lives, from navigating our way home (Uber, Citymapper) to ordering takeout (Deliveroo), to societal endeavours, such as urban planning, farming and crop management.
Massive data and new infrastructure
The opportunities in spacetech are huge, driven by the tech — satellites, drones — and the data they gather. On the one side the raw data is there to be used, value can be extracted, but on the flip side the infrastructure needs to be put in place for business to be able to extract exactly what they need from vast data sets, while ensuring security, and keeping power consumption and physical footprint to a minimum — critical when you’re in space!
Computer server technology can’t keep up with the demands of worldwide exponential data growth. In stark contrast, modern CPU improvements are slowing year on year. We need to shift our thinking. A new order of computing, along with new tools for software developers are required to face these changes head on.

The application potential for FPGAs in the space sector is wide, due to increased performance and low latency for high-speed data analytics, achieved through creating highly parallel designs, but also, importantly, FPGAs offer reduced power consumption and space requirements when compared to modern CPU-based systems.
