On the eve of Independence Day, we spoke about our views and ideas of democracy, protest, and dissent. The most profound moment was when a sixth grader stood up to share the importance of finding our own voices and “passing the mic”, instead of talking over or talking for others.

A young man’s protest in a short story, asking for the Princely State of Mysore to join the Union of India sparked mentions of and passionate conversations about several other protests world over. Think Syria, Feminism, Gun control laws, Dr Ambedkar and his movement against caste-based oppression, Tamana Burke and #MeToo, movements against Donald Trump’s presidency, movements against errant leadership in the past, Sterlite and Thoothukudi, Dalit rights, and Pride.

They leave me in tears, this group of children.

The world’s future is in good hands.
