#TokyoToppers: Franklin, Canada Defeat Mexico to Win Olympic Bronze

Former Western Kentucky outfielder Larissa Franklin and the Canadians have won their first ever Olympic softball medal after defeating Mexico, 3–2, in the bronze medal game.

Mexico finished fourth in its first ever Olympic softball appearance.

Canada struck for a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning on a two-run single from Emma Entzminger to give the Canucks a 2–0 lead.

Mexico responded with a run in the top of the third inning and tied the game in the top of the fifth but Canada scored the game winning run on a Kelsey Harshman sacrifice fly, scoring Janet Leung.

The at-bat prior, Franklin sac bunted Leung over to third.

Not only is it Canada’s first ever Olympic softball medal but Franklin’s hardware is the third ever Olympic medal for a former Hilltopper. (Bernd Herman, Bronze ’75 [4x400m relay], Claire Donahue, Gold ’12 [4x100m relay]).

In the Olympic tournament, Franklin combined to go 4-for-16 with two runs scored, three RBI, one double and a walk.
