After having one of the best seasons in school history, junior outfield Jake Sanford added another accomplishment on Tuesday afternoon as he was drafted by the New York Yankees at #105 overall in the 3rd round of the MLB Draft.

The Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia native is the fifth-highest draft pick in WKU history and the highest drafted player all time from the Canadian province of 959,942 people.

Sanford projects as a left fielder and will presumably leave the Hill after one season, starting his summer season in rookie ball (Pulaski) or Low-A ball (Staten Island). With the Yankees, he joins one of MLB’s premier franchises, they won’t hesitate to trade prospects for proven players so he could eventually end up elsewhere should he rise up the prospect ranks.

Should he make it to the Bronx, it will be awesome to see what he does with Yankees Stadium’s short porch.

He joins fellow ProToppers Anderson Miller (Double-A NW Arkansas), Ben Morrison (High-A, Inland Empire) and Jacob Rhinesmith (Low-A, Hagerstown) in affiliated minor league baseball.

Despite being one and done on the Hill, Sanford leaves a big legacy for the Hilltopper program having won the triple crown in Conference USA to go along with the Player of the Year award. Sanford will look to become WKU’s first major leaguer since Steve Stemle last played for the Royals in 2006.

Best of luck Jake in your minor league future. We’ll keep you posted on his journey over the next few years.
