Last Week

WKU hosted Marshall in the Moonshine Throwdown. The Herd dominated until garbage time jumping out to a 38–0 lead in the third quarter. Tyrrell Pigrome struggled and was benched after his third fumble as Kevaris Thomas orchestrated two late touchdown drives to avoid total embarrassment in a 38–14 loss as the Hilltoppers fell to 1–3 (1–1 in CUSA) on the season.

UAB was on a bye, the previous week they hosted the UTSA Roadrunners. In a game that wasn’t as close as the final score would indicate, the Blazers outgained UTSA 409–280 and jumped out to a 21–6 lead in the third quarter. Four UAB turnovers kept it somewhat close but after a Sincere McCormick touchdown cut it to 8 with 10:31 left, UAB would run out the clock and hold on to a 21–13 Win moving to 3–1 (1–0 in CUSA) on the season)

Last Meeting

Last season, WKU returned from a bye week to take on the defending Conference USA champion UAB Blazers. After falling behind 3–0, WKU would go on a 10–0 run on Josh Simon’s third touchdown catch of the season. WKU would intercept UAB quarterback Tyler Johnston four times on the afternoon and would break a 13 point tie on a 7-yard touchdown pass from Ty Storey to Jahcour Pearson with 11:17 remaining in the fourth quarter. WKU defense would then firm up turning over the Blazers on downs to effectively end the game with 2:11 left. WKU would take a knee and clinch a 20–13 win moving them to 2–2 on the season.

Excitement Level — 6

This is a do or die game for the Hilltoppers and it comes against yet another challenging opponent. They’re staring down the barrel of a 1–4 start and the potential cloud of fan disinterest that would come with the loss. Last year WKU turned a slow start around against the Blazers propelling them to 8 wins in their last 10 games, the potential quarterback change to Kevaris Thomas also makes this matchup intriguing. Let’s hope they find a way to finally live up to the potential shown last year and put a full game together. If WKU becomes the first road team to win at Legion Field since 2014, then the season is definitely back on track.
