On Monday afternoon, head coach Tyson Helton held his weekly press conference to recap the ODU win and preview the Army game.
Here is a recap of what he said:
- It was a great team win against Old Dominion
- “We had an edge to us”
- “Our kids will be really excited to come back home”
- (against Army/the option) Your mindset has to ready to face something you never see
- “We need to force second and long situations”
- “It’s a long slow death if we don’t execute defensively:
- “You’re not going to get that many plays offensively”
- “It’s another great test for us defensively”
- “It’s another great challenge for us defensively”
- Army is going to make their plays
- Need to position ourselves defensively to limit big plays
- “We can’t give them anything easy”
- “In Spring we designated 10 minutes of practice to prepare for the option”
- Also did that in fall camp
- “You can’t just install it (option prep) during game week”
- “That has helped our defense a lot”
- Offense took a lot of pride in getting back on track in the run game
- Gaej was patient with it and let things happen
- Army does everything perfect. They don’t make mistakes
- “Talent-wise they’re about the same as we are”
- “DeAngelo (Malone) is a high motor guy that loves the game of Football”
- Coach White has done a good job of putting him in position to make plays
- “Against ODU we let him spy against the quarterback”
- He’s building confidence and has a lot of guys around him that are helping him
- Juwuan Jones is setting the edge on the other side
- Other than Kyle (Bailey), everybody is rotated (at Linebacker) to be fresh
- ODU game was perfect for Damon Lowe
- Didn’t agree with targeting call. Only met 1 of the 3 factors for targeting (helmet to helmet)
- “We’ll insert him into second half of this game”
- Josh Simon is a big weapon for us, especially by the goal line
- He’s a big athletic guy, great ball skills, hard to cover
- The touchdown catch showed his potential
- We do have a lot of guys offensively that offer different things
Overall this was another typical Monday press conference. Helton is definitely emphasizing how big of a challenge it will be to play Army’s triple-option attack and the disciplined team that runs it.
Tune back for a lot more coverage for the road test against Army. This is a big opportunity for WKU to start to get a signature win outside of Conference USA and get another step closer to bowl eligibility.
