WKU Football’s smooth offseason got some unexpected news on Monday night as it was reported that rising sophomore Safety Clayton Bush has entered the transfer portal

Bush is a 6'1 205 pound Bowling Green native that was the first commitment of the 2019 class after completing his senior season at South Warren High School. Bush is the son of former WKU Football player Wayne Bush, who starred for the Hilltoppers in the ’80s and is now a doctor in Bowling Green. Clayton was a 3-star prospect and one of the better signees in the 2019 class.

He played in all 13 games for the Hilltoppers in 2019 mainly as a special teams player and backup Safety. On the season he totaled 4 tackles and returned 7 punts (for 3 yards). Bush was slated to having to compete again in a crowded defensive backfield that only lost nickel back Coco Darden. Bush was clearly behind Seniors Devon Key & Antwan Kincade at the Safety position and would have to compete with contributors such as Roger Cray, A.J. Brathwaite & Omari Alexander for minutes along with several high-level junior college transfers. No word if playing time was the main factor or if other reasons contributed to Bush’s plans of leaving.

While this isn’t the end of the world for the 2020 roster it does hurt depth moving forward and is shocking considering Bush’s many ties to the program and city. Bush seemed poised to take a larger role in year two to hopefully position himself for the starting lineup in 2021 and beyond. Bush is active on social media and appeared to have enjoyed his first season on the Hill. It will be fascinating to see where he ends up and how the rest of his career plays out. Best of luck to Clayton moving forward.
