WKU Football: The Tops’ Offense is Fine, Secure 46–14 Victory Over Rice

“Terrible quality photo, high quality team.”

The main question for WKU football all summer was how will Jeff Brohm’s offense look without number 12 manning the quarterback position.

To sum that up rather quickly: Number 14 did just fine.

How fine?

517 yards in the series opener against Rice in his first football game appearance in two years. Not to mention, he completed 25 of his 31 pass attempts without a single interception. (Just for comparison’s sake, White tossed 16 interceptions compared to his 11 touchdowns while at USF.)

White was just the tip of the ice berg — the whole team looked good.

It was a slow start offensively, but a special teams capitalization put the first points for WKU on the board with a safety.

The first TD scored would later come from Ace Wales with four minutes to go in the first quarter after a long ball catch from Taiwan Taylor, bumping WKU to 9–0.

The WKU defense held in tact until the second quarter when they gave up a rushing TD to Rice’s Jowan Davis to make it 16–7. But, by then it was too late for the Owls, because the Hilltopper offense kept rolling, and Nick Holt’s defense stood fast as WKU jumped on a 20-nothing run.

After that point, the fans filed out, and so did majority of everyone’s interest because the questions were answered and the game was over. The 46–14 final score was way more one-sided than at least the four of us thought, and began the season on the right foot.

The main question answered from last night’s game? WKU’s offense is just fine without Brandon Doughty on roster. Mike White seemed to feel right at home, as he cruised to what seemed like a very quick 500+ yards. The stat made White just the second player to throw for a 500 yard game in WKU history, something Doughty himself did just twice.

Jeff Brohm said in the post game presser that he was extremely satisfied with the outcome (I mean who wouldn’t be?) and that they were going to enjoy the win for a few days.

But, just becuase the offensive showed yet again another amount of explosiveness to its arsenal doesn’t mean things are all fine and dandy, especially for Week 2’s matchup.

The Hilltoppers can enjoy their victory for a few days, but before long they make their way down to Tuscaloosa next weekend to pay the Crimson Tide a visit.

Brohm said it is back to the grind soon in order to prep for ‘Bama.

This Hilltopper fan however, for the time being is going to rejoice in the fact that if we base the rest of the season on game one’s outcome, then it is going to be another fun ride to be a part of.
