It was a chilly Tuesday afternoon in Bowling Green as newly hired WKU head football coach Tyson Helton was formally introduced in a packed Harbaugh Club in the Houch.

Helton made his public debut as head coach just two days after it was announced Mike Sanford was relieved of his duties as head coach. Hilltopper Athletic Director Todd Stewart spoke about how he had a plan to hire the next coach toward the end of the year as Helton was toward the top of the list.

Coach Helton said and seemed to be very grateful for the opportunity to come back to Bowling Green calling this community the best out of all the places he has been. He thanked his family and fellow coaches such as his brother Clay and also Jeff Brohm to make a few.

As far as the football side of things goes, Helton was asked if the style of offense he ran when he was on WKU’s coaching staff during the Brohm years would return and he said it would.

Not sure about you but that definitely excites me. He said that he wants fans to be standing and/or on the edge of their seat every time they take a shot deep passing the ball and wants to bring back the exciting offense that shattered so many WKU records between 2013–2015.

Helton did not publicly say if he plans to retain any/some of the current coaching staff but will spend time with each of them as well as the team. There are reports that Bryan Ellis will become offensive coordinator but he did not say anything about it today.

Helton said he’s seen many familiar faces on the team since he was a part of recruiting some of the current players on the team such as Steven Duncan (who was also in attendance) which seeing them grow up some already was nice for him to see. He plans on evaluating the talent he has and plans on recruiting new players as soon as everyone was done at the press conference.

Helton said he is ready to get to work to take WKU football back to where it was during his time here as a coordinator and wants to bring national relevance and more Conference USA titles back to the Hill.

Helton was personally my candidate that I was hoping Stewart would hire and today I believe he has shown that he’s grown as a coach and a person since he was last here in 2015 and will bring back the exciting offensive play that made WKU so special just a few years ago.

I’m excited to see who else he gets on his coaching staff as well as what kind of players he brings in for next year.
