Despite the recent push of interest from WKU towards him, Tremont Waters, a consensus four-star guard, has signed with LSU.

Waters was one of the last ESPN 50 players to sign. After originally signing with Georgetown, he was able to be released from his NLI once their head coach John Thompson III was fired. He reopened his recruitment and took four official visits before deciding on LSU. So what happened with WKU?

Waters played in the Jordan Brand Classic game alongside WKU signee Mitchell Robinson where they got to know each other well and soon after is when WKU started to recruit him. While most of Hilltopper Nation was hoping he would sign with WKU, there are several reasons why he went to LSU.

One of the main reasons being WKU’s plethora of guards already on the team. As of right now, WKU will be adding seven new guards to the team next season. The backcourt is very crowded already for WKU, so Waters probably saw the addition of JUCO star Jordan Brangers and others and decided to go somewhere he could get more playing time right off the bat.

Another is the rebuilding of LSU. The Tigers hired VCU’s Will Wade as their new head coach this offseason and he’s already put in a huge effort to get LSU back to the high level it used to be at by recruiting and bringing in players that fit the type of system he ran at VCU.

Waters will be a much needed addition and will be exactly what Wade would want out of a point guard for his team. LSU’s recruiting class is now #14 in the nation according to Scout with the four four-star recruits they have, plus former North Texas star Jeremy Combs transferred there as well.

While he would have been a good addition to the already loaded class WKU has coming in next season, the Tops should still have plenty of options at the guard position for a while so missing out on this recruit won’t be the end of the world for WKU.

How did you react when Waters announced he was signing with LSU? Were you really wanting him to come to the Hill? Will the Tops having “too much” talent at a position be a problem in the future?
