“Affective computing” is a technology that can read human emotions. According to VLAB, Bay Area Chapter of MIT Enterprise Forum, it is a part of $32 billion consumer market research industry that’s populated by companies aiming to elevate brand and product experiences.

Startups in the industry are using machine intelligence, data analytics and sensors to capture and interpret human emotions in the speech, facial expressions and gestures, as well as track physiological indicators such as heart rate, dilation of the pupils and others.

Analyzed data can be then used to make forecasts and create new experiences in education, entertainment, advertising and others.

Without doubt, “affective computing” could help expanding user experience in various industries. However, are we ready to sacrifice emotional privacy for a better customer service in the future?
