Tony Romo needs to be wrapped in cellophane — and not unwrapped until the Cowboys’ first regular-season game. In any season. Ever.

That’s about the only way to protect America’s Team’s most precious asset, it would seem, with the news that Romo broke a bone in his back when tackled on the third play from scrimmage in Thursday’s preseason against the Seahawks.

So all the world suggesting rookie Dak Prescott be handed the reins at quarterback are getting their wish for now — and let’s just see what the pressure of being expected to take charge with no backup in sight does to the young man.

Southeastern Conference football, as good as it is, is not the NFL, just as preseason action is not the same as being released to go all-out in the regular season.

As for Romo, tough breaks sure do follow him around. Cellophane might protect his body, but even someone as optimistic as Romo can’t keep the doubts and uncertainty from washing over him as he contemplates yet another road to recovery.

The ‘Boys in blue face a long, long, long season ahead of them, none bluer than their fearless leader. At 36, this comeback might very well be his last.
