In just 11 days, the Rio Olympics will be here, and we can’t wait to cheer, critique and deliver the juiciest bits to you Relish readers. Here’s the latest from Rio:
- USA is sending is sending the largest delegation of athletes to Rio with 555, and more women than we’ve ever sent with 292.
- The entire Russian team was not banned by the IOC, who chose to leave it up to each individual sport. And the whistleblower who brought to light the state-sponsored doping that runs rampant in Russia will not be allowed to compete at the Games as a neutral athlete. Yulia Stepanova was banned for two years for doping before she turned whistleblower. She and her husband left Russia in 2014 and are now living in the U.S. in an undisclosed location.
- Ten “amateur” Islamic State backers were arrested in Rio for plotting attacks during the Games.
- The lagoon in front of Olympic Park is so dirty that the fish there are dying.
- A man tried to steal the Olympic torch as it passed through a town in Sao Paolo.
- Zika now has been found in another, more common type of mosquito. You might try Hope Solo’s approach at protecting herself from mosquitoes: hats, nets and an arsenal of repellant.
- The Aussies say the Olympic Village is uninhabitable, while CNN says the accommodations are five-star.
- Who cares if there’s water pouring down the walls — the Village is stocked with 450,000 condoms! That’s three times more than they distributed at London 2012. (Whose job is it to count these things anyway?) Well, Rio must live up to its reputation as one of the sexiest cities in the world.
