NBA Updates

Paul Pierce announced his retirement following the upcoming NBA season via The Player’s Tribune Monday morning. Late ’90s draft picks have begun retiring in droves (Pierce, Kobe, Tim Duncan, Kevin Garnett) and it’s making us feel old.

Chris Bosh has been insistent upon his return to the NBA, but it doesn’t look like it’ll be with Miami: After Bosh failed a recent physical, Heat team owner Pat Riley told reporters the team isn’t working to bring Bosh back.

MLB Update

The Marlins will be a little harder to tell apart Monday night, but for a very good reason: They’ll all be wearing #16 to honor Jose Fernandez’s memory, and the number will then be retired.

NFL Updates

The Dallas Cowboys had been struggling mightily to win at home, until Sunday night’s 31–17 win over the Chicago Bears. Combine Dallas RB Ezekiel Elliott finally getting into a groove and running 140 yards with Chicago’s no-win status, and color us unsurprised.

Injury Report:

  • Seahawks QB Russell Wilson sprained his MCL during Sunday’s win over the 49ers but thinks he’ll be good to go for Week 4, while teammate and running back Thomas Rawls looks to be out a few weeks with a fractured fibula.
  • Unfortunately, a few players’ seasons were ended on Sunday: Running back Shane Vereen of the New York Giants needs surgery on his triceps, San Diego Chargers linebacker Manti Te’o tore his Achilles tendon, and Washington safety DeAngelo Hall tore his ACL.

Soccer Update

FIFA has decided to disband its anti-racism task force because, in their mind, their mission has been accomplished. Judging by the current state of world affairs, we tend to disagree, but that’s their prerogative.

Hockey Update

The best-of-three final round of the World Cup of Hockey begins Tuesday night, when the dominant Team Canada will take on the underdogs of Team Europe after the latter upset Team Sweden in overtime on Sunday. Team Canada star Brad Marchand is looking past the tournament to his NHL future with the Boston Bruins: he just signed a contract extension worth $49 million for eight years.

Creepy Picture of the Day

The first mascot in Edmonton Oilers’ history is a lynx named Hunter (after the founder of the franchise). Totally cuddly. Not scary at all.

University of Michigan’s female athletes who lettered from fall 1973 to spring 1991 finally got the varsity jackets they deserve.

Of course Vin Scully’s final play call at Dodgers Stadium was a walk-off home run to win the division:
