The Research Nest’s Plans For the Summer

This May-June, we have something special up our sleeve. Here’s your chance to participate in a unique event, and it is all about memes!

Yes, you heard it right! Learning through the coming of age trends was something we wanted to experiment on here at The Research Nest. With a bit of wit and humor, juice up your creativity as we officially launch the Machine Learning Memefest.

The Campaign Details:

This is a month-long online learning program focussed on Artificial Intelligence and its key concepts. However, there is a catch. All learning will be through memes!

All machine learning enthusiasts are welcome to submit their memes themed around AI and related fields like Machine learning and Deep learning at the.research.nest@gmail.com with a short write-up describing the underlying meaning the meme conveys.

At the end of it, we will select the top ones that reflect the greatest wit and creativity and give a special shout out to the creators.

We will also be posting some interesting memes that impart some learning throughout the month. Follow our social media handles on Facebook, LinkedIn, and Instagram to stay updated.

Guidelines for Meme Creation

  • The meme must be themed around AI
  • The meme must not depict any offensive content.
  • You can use any templates you can find online or create your own ones.
  • You can send us as many memes as possible.

Criteria for Judging

  • The wit and humor aspect
  • Originality
  • The relatability of the meme to actual scientific concepts
  • The complexity of the meme
  • Original and new templates, if created by you will have bonus points
  • The quality of the write-up associated with the meme

A Note on Plagiarism

  • You are allowed to take inspiration from other existing memes but we would appreciate some novelty in your creation, like a distinct enhancement or modification.
  • If your submission is found to be directly taken from the internet (sites like Reddit, Tumblr, etc) or other meme pages on social media, it shall be rejected.

Last date to submit your memes: June 20, 2019

Here are some examples we made to give an idea:

Dropout is an approach used in neural networks to prevent overfitting, which essentially makes the neural network perform better on the training data but fail when new data is given. As the name suggests, we just simply drop a percentage of the neurons of the given layer when passing the parameters to the next layer. This helps the neural network not to build a bias towards training data and learn other sparse features as well.
It is well known that neural networks often take a ridiculous amount of time to train. Here’s a funny analogy to depict the same.
A classic Avengers template to depict how easy it has become today to train neural networks using modern frameworks like Keras and Tensorflow.

At the end of the MemeFest, all the memes will be compiled into a single book, one of the world’s first Machine Learning Meme Book giving due credit to all creators and will be released to the public. Here’s your chance to be a part of this special event.

Together, let’s share a laugh and learn a thing or two through memes!

#HappyLearning
