When the U.S. military invaded our southern shores of Guánica in 1898, many here believed they were well-intentioned. Back then, Borinquen (the Indigenous Taino name for Puerto Rico) had been a Spanish colony for over three centuries.

Under the December 1898 Paris Treaty, Spain ceded our Caribbean jewel, as well as Guam and the Philippines to the North American imperial monster.

That’s the short version.

For the past 127 years, hundreds of thousands of mi gente have maintained the liberation struggle alive. They have protested — at times, even via arms and more determined tactics. An oppressed people have every right to demand their independence.

By any means necessary!

At the heart of our liberation struggle: our identity and culture. And though many here speak English, the fact remains that the first colonizer…
