Hustling is a popular (and arguably a very sexy) term for the act of workaholism. Considered by many — and also proven by studies — to be a depressant and productivity killer. Most people are advised to avoid hustling. However, is this practice entirely bad?

The answer would be YES, if you are to implement it into your daily work but still, there are times at which this could be of great use with very minimal demerits.

For independent creators, this will be at times when you are stuck, when you encounter that block or when your ideas refuse to materialize into your work. However, you must realize that hustle should never become a habit. It will only give you sudden bursts of productivity but you can never be consistent.

Hustling can help you to rocket yourself to the mark of balance whenever you encounter a dip or block, but in order to stay there, you need to learn how to organize.

When you are at a block, moving forward in a pre-planned or organized way would be highly difficult. You won’t be able to create art at exactly the same time and same way you want. So you have to learn to thrive on the ones you have, set things aside and focus on a single idea. Keep working on that single idea and create something. Once you successfully finish a task it will start creating some momentum, which can help you move forward faster.

So at times when we are without any momentum (i.e. while feeling stuck), don’t force yourself to stick to the schedule. Instead work on something, create something. Your success should be the source of your momentum. It is what we call internal motivation, and it is the thing that will keep us moving.

Next time you feel stuck, don’t focus on organizing too much, instead, focus on creating. And then look back at what you have done — no matter how little it is — your success (every small one that adds up) will push you forward towards the bigger goals that matter.
