The Hidden Pitfalls Of Buying Old Tech

Is That Old MacBook Really Worth It?

--

This post was originally aimed at developers, but I guess non-developers can still learn from it. I keep on seeing posts like ‘Do you think I should buy this garbage 2012 Mac just to develop on?’ Originally I was like, “Definitely no.” The reason being XCode.

Now let’s say you were in charge of designing XCode. You want the worst possible app designed to annoy the most number of developers possible. So what do you do? Well first you make sure in order to do anything development related in the OS you need XCode. Check. Then you make it take forever to install. Check. And then you make sure XCode only works with the latest version of MacOS. Check.

Now you don’t need the latest version of XCode to do everything, thank god. But you do need the latest version to build Mac and iOS apps. So right now that’s Ventura. And I suspect when Sonoma comes out the latest XCode will soon only be able to work with that one.
