Our carbon footprints equate to how much greenhouse gas we generate through all of our actions. What cars we choose, what diets we have, where we choose to go on holiday, and how often we buy clothes and where we buy them from, are all decisions which influence our carbon footprints.

A greenhouse gas is a gas which absorbs infrared radiation. These gases, when they absorb this radiation, trap heat that would otherwise escape the planet’s atmosphere and filter off into space. Radiation which is unable to escape the Earth’s atmosphere is absorbed by the planet’s oceans and lands.

This has the effect we all commonly associate with climate change — global warming — and its extent is determined by our carbon footprints. As should be clear, the gases that are produced to serve our consumer behaviour contribute to the greenhouse effect. In order to reduce how much the planet is warming and to offset the possibly devastating impact of climate change, we all need to make an effort to reduce our carbon footprints.

1. Make disciplined decisions about food

Greenhouse gases include carbon dioxide and methane. Methane is produced by livestock in high quantities, especially cows and…
