The unbearable grief of Black mothers

To acknowledge our grief during this moment, is to be in deep relationship with one another — in the kind of beloved community we know will sustain us.

As we recalibrate to the rhythm of life during a global pandemic, we are reminded that grief is touching us all in different ways. Resonance’s offerings have evolved with the moment, making sacred space for loss, fear, and mourning — “Wailing Circles” that allow us to grieve and heal collectively.

The piece below puts the notion of collective grief and trauma into deeper perspective. We know that Black mothers contend daily with the fear of raising black boys and girls in a systemically racist, sexist world. But against the backdrop of COVID-19, this becomes especially harrowing. “The unbearable grief of Black mothers” is powerful, essential, reading that addresses the collective breathlessness and grief of mothers who are acutely aware of the dangers their children face just for existing.
