Let’s be honest. Shit is real. On the heels of a pandemic, a global wave of uprisings for racial justice, a dangerous ecological tipping point, and the most consequential presidential election of our time, we are witnessing the collapse of systems that have failed us — and have been failing us for generations.

We need new ways of being together. And this was the inspiration for We Govern. A foundational set of agreements to guide how we make the decisions that impact us all, including how we choose to live together, use our resources, and build systems rooted in mutual care. It is an invitation to commit to these agreements as a path toward what’s possible.

Governance is the process by which people determine the norms and rules that guide people’s everyday life and behavior, and we—all of us—have a role in governance. Whether it’s through our personal lives as parents, neighbors, friends, caregivers and stewards; or in our work as leaders and decision-makers—the choices we touch every day can determine our emergent future.

Perhaps the language below from the We-Govern.org’s FAQs captures it best:

Whether deciding if it is worth it to struggle with a kiddo to eat broccoli, facilitating a healing conversation among friends, or creating a spending plan for clean energy in your town, the act of making choices for our collective wellbeing is governance. Governance is making decisions together — at small and large scales — about the things that matter to us and impact our lives.

A vision of another world in light of the current crises we face is more urgent, more needed — and more possible — than ever. We can usher in a more just, harmonious and thriving future, one that addresses the imbalances inherent in our systems and refuses to leave anyone behind. And we can start now.
