Elections can be stressful, with the country’s balance of power on the line, negativity in advertisements, waiting for the uncertainty of results and friends on opposing sides of the political divide getting angry at each other.

ASUN, the student body at UNR, is marking Election Day Nov. 8, with a series of week-long events to relieve some of the stress.

Monday’s event called “Paint Your Future” had painting in the Knowledge Center with art supplies, candy, and other stress relievers for students. If a student was in a hurry to get to class, they could take a to go bag for them to be able to paint with later.

On the table, there were also mental health resources for students, with addresses on and off campus. On the backside of the cards there was a wellness guide for students after the election.

“I enjoy that our student government is putting on events for election week,” Hallie Borgel, a senior said. “I think that events like these urge students to go out and vote. It also is a good resource for students who might not know where to vote or how to get involved with the election process.”

Details for election week events are provided on the Nevada ASUN Instagram page which informs the students about where and when different events will take place.

On the last day before voting day, walking throughout campus, there were still several tables set up for students to be able to go up to in order to receive information about the election and to discuss candidates. These tables provided election details for students as well as pizza and donuts for students to pick up.

“Aw, that is so nice that these are being provided for us,” a student said when walking by the table.

On Election Day, there will be free nachos for “Nacho Average Election” providing extra guidance and motivation for voting.

“I think it is really important for students to go out and vote,” Borgel said. “I appreciate that ASUN is posting about ways to cast your vote in Nevada.”

Tuesday’s voting will take place on campus on the fourth floor in the Joe Crowley Student Union from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Students can also still cast their ballot via mail.
