Reporters Kat Fulwider, Joseph Martinez, John Purdy, and Kelly Yang from the Reynolds School of Journalism spoke with three people about their experiences and perceptions about CrossFit and community on the University of Nevada, Reno campus.

Alex Baker, the facility coordinator of E.L. Wiegand Fitness Center, was a three-sport athlete in high school who took fitness as parts of the trainings to improve athletic performances. When he started at the university and learned about CrossFit, it changed how he viewed working out.

“I didn’t view fitness as lifestyle before I came to university, and I saw individuals doing crazy butterfly pull-ups, then I went to the front desk and asked what that was, they said it was our new CrossFit program…then I signed up the next day,” Baker said.

Kenna McNulty, a sophomore studying pre-nursing at UNR, had her first CrossFit workout experience with her dad. She was fascinated with the community of CrossFit and felt she was not alone.

“The best part is that I don’t have to workout by myself,” McNulty said. “I have a bunch of people to workout with, become fit and become stronger and support each other. That’s why I really love CrossFit.”

Braxton Harms, the aquatics coordinator for fitness and recreation at UNR, is also a CrossFit coach.

Harms loves seeing people in the class, improving themselves everyday and putting smiles on their faces.

“The best part is brightening their day within the 50 minutes that we see them,” he said. “Being rowdy and energetic is great to put a smile on people’s faces.”
