Miller, a 24-year-old student at the University of Nevada, Reno, holds her cat, Chloe, at home, while explaining her interest in Inktober. “Personally, I really like the harsh contrast and also, as far as adding black and white to a picture depending on what kind of ink or what kind of black and whites are being implemented — if it’s just straight up black and white, then there’s high contrast. It adds tension and action…” she said sharing some of her own creative thought process.
Listen to a mini audio documentary by Christopher Torres interviewing Vera Miller on her introduction to Inktober.
Supplies Miller has been using for Inktober. Underneath her writing tools is her sketchbook. From left to right, an ink marker, a pen, a sharpie, and another pen.
A close up shot of the ink pen used to fill in the drawing. “…Me trying to participate in Inktober in the last decade from the sidelines, like I’ve always thought about it, always super enjoyed the art that comes from it. But doing a drawing every day when I can barely draw one once a week, if that, is kind of wild.”
Miller works diligently on her sketch, pictured through the glass inside of the now closed Record Street Bibo coffee shop.
A look of the sketch from the previous day that Vera had yet to have completed. The prompt for that day was bait.“…Doing this everyday will be a process and a challenge that I want to come out the other side being like, ‘I was successful at doing this, I completed this.’ So that’s really cool.”
