New York Times Editor visits Reno, talks about Trump and the future of journalism
Not even the rain and a rival basketball game could stop more than 200 people filing into the Nevada Museum of Art on Wednesday night. Students, faculty, media professionals and members of the public were all there to see the executive editor from one of the biggest newspapers in the country, The New York Times.
Dean Baquet spoke on the First Amendment and the future of journalism to a packed theater. Professor Caesar Andrews moderated the talk, asking everything from Baquet’s experience as an editor to the decision to not publish allegations raised in a controversial dossier on President Trump. Baquet encouraged aspiring journalists to focus on visual media and learn as much as they could about history. He also encouraged journalists to report as objectively and fairly as possible, even if they “didn’t like Trump.”
Undergraduate student Joey Lovato said the event was very engaging.
“Baquet was very knowledgeable and brought some new perspectives on the state of journalism in regards to the new administration in Washington,” said Lovato.
So many people wanted to attended the event the Museum scrambled to set up an overflow room where about 60 people watched the Facebook live stream. You can watch that exact stream on our Facebook page.
The presentation was followed by a reception where attendees got to meet Baquet, take selfies with the editor, and sign copies of The New York Times.
At an earlier event on the University of Nevada, Reno campus, Baquet addressed a room full of students and media professionals on issues of personal integrity. He talked about the importance of remaining objective. He said, in a way, The New York Times reporters give up First Amendment rights in exchange for access.
