A light snowstorm hit Reno last weekend, and many students were quick to assume the snow would be done with for now.

But on Election Day, Nov. 8, the University of Nevada, Reno campus was hit with a whiteout. As hours moved along, there were fewer and fewer students on their paths to and from classes, their cars, bikes, or scooters. Many students were bundled up with scarves and beanies to feel warmer.

The university issued a statement saying: “Due to the report of worsening weather conditions, dropping temperatures and potentially dangerous road conditions, all in-person, on-campus University of Nevada, Reno classes beginning at 4 p.m. or later today, Tuesday, Nov. 8 have been canceled. All non-essential operations will be suspended at this time as well.”

However, some students originally from Reno saw no surprise in the weather and wouldn’t be surprised if it gets drier and warmer soon.

“I honestly don’t think it will snow for a while,” said freshman Nate. “Because a lot of times we get this early drop, and then it dies down.”

Due to the substantial snowfall that has taken place today, many UNR students are now looking forward to local mountains opening for winter sports.

“I’m really happy and excited,” said Nate. “The mountain must have gotten a lot, it was already white before today, so now I’m very excited maybe we can get the mountain open early this year.”

One nearby ski place Mount Rose says it will open Friday.

Students at UNR come from near and far, some of them with warmer climates.

“I’m a California boy,” said junior Trevor Paez. “I’m used to 70 degrees 24/7. So a little snow on the ground, Lil chilly, it’s a little different for me but I like it.”

“I love seeing the snow,” said senior TC Wegner, another California student. “Only time I enjoy being cold.”
