Voting Goes On at UNR, while Classes Close Due to Snow

Although open to the public, many of the voters at the voting center at the UNR campus on Nov. 8 were students. Voting continued into the early evening even though classes were stopped after four p.m. due to snow.
If you didn’t bring your mail-in ballot, the line to vote stretched all the way down the back hall of the fourth floor in the building known as the Joe.
“It’s like a habit for me,” Logan Sternberg said of voting, which he said he started doing since he turned 18. “I voted because I care about the candidates that are running and I also did hear that there is severe undervoting in Nevada.”
According to the Nevada Secretary of State website, 10% of active voters in Nevada range from 18 to 24, a small, but important number nonetheless, with very close races across the state, for one Senate seat, the governorship and other important positions.
Some students though like Emily Boehme stayed away from the voting line, not feeling interested enough.
“I’m not really educated on what the candidates are promoting to the public,” Boehme said. “I feel like politics have become so one-sided for each party and people become close minded in their own political parties. It’s hard to keep up with.”
Boehme did vote in the 2020 presidential election. “[It] was so controversial and I feel like I had my own opinions on the presidential candidates that year,” she said.
Campus has been crawling with political advocates and volunteers this semester, in hopes to get college students to participate in the midterms. Despite the snow and some students, like Boehme staying away, the line looked substantial at the Joe.
