Waiting to Hit the Slopes Again with Nevada’s Winter Sports Club
From four year members to members with little to no experience, the Nevada Winter Sports Club has a place for everybody and is eagerly awaiting the next season as James Reno reports.
Four-year member Alexander Moloo can’t wait to carpool again with other Nevada Winter Sports Club members and spend many days at the mountain. He even scheduled his spring courses around his skiing plans for this next season.
The Nevada Winter Sports Club is one of the biggest clubs on UNR’s campus and members are getting ready with temperatures starting to fall.
“There are membership dues and we do fundraisers, mainly at Reno Aces games,” Moloo said, giving insight into how the club operates and why it is so popular. “Every member can purchase a discounted Ikon pass and we have events throughout the year where the club provides free food and people can hang out.”
The club has won awards for being one of the best coed clubs on campus and members love how inclusive it’s been over the years.
“We have social events where members can all meet at the same mountain and ride together, which has allowed me to meet some really cool people,” another four-year member Ryan Wischmeyer said.
“It’s also nice to be able to carpool with other members and spend the day at the mountain with them. Last year I made some unforgettable memories that I feel like I wouldn’t have made if I hadn’t joined the club”, Wischmeyer said.
One of the best highlights of the club seems to be its inclusivity. New member Kenzie Kosco talked about her main reason for joining the club.
“I’m a beginner at skiing and wanted to get better which the club will allow me to do,” she said.
“The club has a program called The Learn to Ski Program for members that you can apply for and they will pair you with an expert skier from the club who will spend a day with you teaching you how to ski. It’s nice that you don’t have to be good at skiing in order to be a member, which is something I was worried about at first.”
The club has a high retention rate with members at all kinds of skill levels. One of the most important things for the members is being able to take full advantage of the season and always have fun on the mountain.
