10 Great Film Scores You Should Revisit
A Story In 2 Parts: Part 2 — Film Scores 1983–2000
Here’s Part One.
6. Cry Freedom (1987) — George Fenton, Jonas Gwangwa
This was an extraordinary film, possibly one of Denzel Washington’s best, about the life, imprisonment, and suspicious death of the South African anti-apartheid activist Stephen Biko. He died while in Police custody, aged 30, on the 12th of September 1977.
The film details the relationship between Stephen Biko (Denzel Washington) and journalist Donald Woods, played by Kevin Kline. The reason this film made my list of film scores was this was one of my first introductions to South African music. The score by George Fenton & Jonas Gwangwa was captivating and paints a picture of the South African landscape.
