The 70s were… well, I wouldn’t know; I wasn’t alive to experience them. But, I have listened to quite a few albums from the decade. I could have done this with any decade from the past 8 and could have come up with a few, but I picked the '70s because… the first album I wanted to recommend happened to be from the '70s, and I wanted a reason to recommend it.

However, it is important to note that the 70s was a weird time for Jazz artists. Jazz had been a part of the cultural zeitgeist for a long time before it, but it was losing its hold; rock was especially popular and eating up almost the entirety of the charts. There were, obviously, artists that still thrived. I love this decade of jazz because of its experimental nature and free-flowing and contemplative energy.

Let’s begin

Eternity by Alice Coltrane

Alice Coltrane was a magical musician, one of my favourite artists. Eternity is my favourite of her records and one I go back to frequently. It deserves to be in the Jazz canon; anyone who has listened to it would agree. This is a serene, beautiful album coming from a deeply spiritual headspace, as many albums from Alice had, but I find this album uniquely adventurous in her catalogue…
