A Mix of God and Monkey
This Month’s Rotation
In the song “Pain” Iggy Pop growls “I’m a mix of god and monkey”, embracing the mix of primal and transcendent aspects of humanity. I’d like to think music equally reflects angst and the sublime.
As such, I start with some punchy bangers full of grit and angst to drive up the spring fever and I finish with a few ethereal songs to float you through the shoulder season of summer.
Side A/Monkey:
There is no opener greater than this track — even Thurston Moore puts in his top 25 all-time songs. It doesn’t get more punk than musically scrapping with racist skinheads. In a direct attack against racism “Hong Kong Garden” pulses and crashes righteously along to a tight xylophone melody.
I still cannot believe such glorious music was emerging despite some of the dross coming off the late ‘70s.
