Album Review | ‘143’ by Katy Perry
Perry’s return with dance-oriented 143 fails to deliver hooks like her earlier releases.
Katy Perry’s flirtation with the charts has continued to be rocky since her 2017 release of Witness. Her follow-up, Smile, may have made it to the top 5, but the singles failed to see the same success. Each one appears to drop further down the charts than the last.
In the wake of Witness's failure, Perry seems to have prioritized commercial polish over personality, which has only made listeners distance themselves further from the pop star. Katy stepped away from her role as a judge on the talent show American Idol to focus back on music.
However, the generic production and lyrics in her debut single, “Woman’s World,” (not to mention the controversy surrounding her use of producer Dr. Luke) have continued to thicken that glass ceiling that Perry can’t seem to break. 143 taps into her desire to write a dance album.
Katy confessed in an Instagram Live that this project is one of two that she’s been clamoring to release:
