Album Review | ‘My Mind Wonders and Sometimes Leaves Completely’ by Lola Young
The sophomore release weaves struggles with self-worth and mental health through the lens of love and heartbreak.
South London native Lola Young’s husky, soulful voice garnered her comparisons to Amy Winehouse and Adele since she debuted in 2019. Though her background at The Brit School shares a connection with the two artists she’s compared to the most, Young’s style and songwriting are all her own.
Her 2022 release, My Mind Wanders and Sometimes Leaves Completely, combs deeper than just love and loss, exploring Lola’s battle with Schizoaffective Disorder (something she was diagnosed with at age 17).
Young discussed with Clash Magazine how her mental health blended into the various themes that flow across this project:
“It is a completely direct link to that. I think it’s a beautiful title that resonates a lot with me in terms of my mental health condition. It’s kind of got that essence of the intrusive thought nature of the mind, and how it can wander very quickly in different directions.
