Album Review | ‘Night of Hunters’ by Tori Amos

Amos’s 12th release is yet another career peak as she reinterprets the classics on salvaging a marriage in this modern song cycle.

By the turn of the 2010s, Amos had begun to reshape her sound with adult contemporary, soul, and classic rock strands. After her last album, the electronically emblazoned Abnormally Attracted to Sin, it seemed like the muses had started to lead her away from the sound she was known for.

A chance contact from the classical label Deutsche-Grammophon would reinvigorate her creative essence as she tackled a modern take on the classical song cycle. Unlike in her childhood, this time Tori had complete control over how she wanted to reinterpret the classics as she penned the story of a woman’s battle to save her relationship. Amos revealed to NME that the opportunity to interpret classical pieces her way was the catalyst for working on the project:

“Dr. Buhr at Deutsche Grammophon knew I’d been working on a musical for quite a while and trusted that I would have some understanding of narrative and therefore would be able to take on board a song cycle.
