Album Review | ‘Where I’ve Been, Isn’t Where I’m Going’ by Shaboozey
Shaboozey sheds the demons of his past to move on anew on his most country-sounding release yet.
2024 seems to be Shaboozey’s year. After landing a feature on Beyoncé’s highly anticipated country album Cowboy Carter, he would continue to make waves as his single “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” got viral notoriety. The Virginia native started with decidedly more rap-oriented work that shone on his debut Lady Wrangler.
You can hear his father’s love of outlaw country bleeding into the album’s production even then. Where I’ve Been, Isn’t Where I’m Going is a departure from his straddling of genres that effortlessly wind through his prior album Cowboys Live Forever, Outlaws Never Die. Shaboozey shifts gears, giving his countryside time to shine. He revealed to Colors X Studios that the central theme of this release was a journey to new beginnings:
“The album has a road trip vibe. It’s like a spectator taking in all that they’re seeing on the road. My main message is ‘where I’ve been isn’t where I’m going’. It’s about getting to your new destination and looking forward to new horizons.” — Shaboozey via Colors X Studios (2024)
“Horses & Hellcats” starts with a fresh blend of trap beats and dusty country…
