The third album from the Kentucky hardcore punk quintet is their most direct and punishing to date.

Heavy metal holds a special place in my heart, but I find listening to a lot of new metal bands these days, many of them rely on a similar sound and formula. Therefore, I find myself gravitating toward artists with unique voices or sounds, people with something new to say.

I found exactly that when I went to a show headlined by Kentucky’s own Knocked Loose. I had no idea what to expect, but I was enthralled with their presence, gothic set design, and, most of all, babyfaced frontman Bryan Garris’ insane voice. He utilizes a unique high-pitched scream-rap vocal style, which makes the band immediately stand out from their contemporary, and they paired him with some brutal, crushing, yet technical riffage.

The quintet were in town promoting their brand-new album You Won’t Go Before You’re Supposed To, and I knew I had to dive in. What I found is an all-killer, no-filler slate of some of the heaviest metalcore this year, and I am deeply impressed.

Knocked Loose kicks things off with “Thirst,” which gives us a good old-fashioned metal jump scare right off the bat. They get us to lean in…
