We could say that the death of DMX last Friday wasn’t all that surprising. Given what he’s been through in life — abuse, addiction, crime, imprisonment, and violence — it’s a miracle that X lasted this long. He came close to leaving Earth five years ago when he was found unconscious in a car park and had to be resuscitated.

But that was a different, deeply troubled DMX with a head full of screaming demons he fought for decades.

The X, who’s been released from prison after a year in 2019, was a changed man: Transformed, calm, more attached to his faith and God than ever before. Maybe for the first time, he allowed his wounds to actually start to heal.

“My relationship with God has gotten so much stronger. He’s always had his hand on me. He always guided me. I didn’t always go where he wanted me to go. But He always had me.” — DMX

After a year of his release, he appeared on Instagram and started delivering virtual Bible study sessions like a preacher. He gained weight, smiled surprisingly often, and looked truly happy. The demons were still there, lurking, but it seemed like they stopped screaming. The fact that he was healthy and stable gave off a hopeful vibe — it made me think…
