In 1967, The Beatles embarked on an ambitious project. Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band transcended what it meant to be an excellent album. A musical masterpiece, no doubt, the appeal of Sgt Pepper’s lay beyond just the songs.

With its iconic album cover, Sgt Pepper’s became one of the earliest albums to place a special emphasis on the presentation of the packaging alongside the music. With an unprecedented budget of around £3,000 (£50,000 in today’s money), the famous album cover features The Beatles surrounded by a who’s who of famous figures.

Selected by the band themselves and artists Peter Blake and Robert Fraser, the various famous faces were a mix of cutouts and wax statues designed by pop-artist Jann Haworth. While many recognise the cover instantly, few may know who these people on the cover of Sgt Pepper’s are.

In this article, we will take a look at the first 10 of these notable faces and, where possible, explain why they were selected to appear on the cover.
