Heard of Dire Straits? You Haven’t Really Heard Them Until You Hear This Album

You’ll become an instant fan (if you weren’t already).

Most people know Dire Straits for their hits — “Sultans of Swing,” “Money for Nothing,” and “Walk of Life.”

They were huge.

There are a few others, of course. But folks who aren’t avid fans may not know that there are some masterpieces between those megahits.

In my opinion, the best example is their 1982 release, Love Over Gold.

A different kind of album

This album seemingly broke the rules of popular music at the time.

It was a time when pop music was again geared towards radio-friendly songs — songs that were short enough and “mainstream” enough to fit into a radio station’s programming — holding listeners’ attention long enough while still allowing room for a lot of commercial ads every hour.

Gone were the great days of classic rock, when a band could release long epic tracks that were miniature rock operas. Sure, that kind of thing was still around. But it was not the norm anymore. The MTV generation was about to take over.
