It’s Not Brain Surgery … Oh Wait, Yes It Is!!
A surgically precise seven songs
Last Wednesday, 28 June, I underwent deep strain stimulation surgery as an advanced therapy for Parkinson’s disease. The surgery was a complete success!
Today, 6 July, I was discharged from hospital, and my wife and I made our way home! But not before I threw together a rapid-fire seven songs from recent days.
The surgery was lengthy and complex. Eight hours in total. The first four involved the placement of the stimulator leads into the brain. This was done under sedation, so they could wake me up and test me while they found the sweet spot for the lead.
With both sides of the brain done, it was party time in the theatre — tunes were pumping through a sound system, and there was much banter, all while the surgeon sealed my head shut. When I asked if the patient who was still awake got the right to veto the song choices, I was told no, but they did cede to hear my request. However, they promptly ignored that, with the radiographer dedicating the following song to the surgeon …
