And the ethos of improvisation

"...Young and old as a whole
Those who know jazz is prose
And how it goes and is going to be
Me, us, we, free..."
— The Last Poets, "Jazzoetry"

They
Said jazz —
Like
Stardust —
Had more than
Enough
Magic to meld
Every soul.

Jazz — basically crownless, not particularly
icon-oriented, uninterested in statues and
monuments — doesn’t stop and bask.

Jazz is the power — with unscripted
conversations built on emotional exploits
of musicians who make split-second
decisions to fulfill what they feel — of here
and now, always going somewhere in real
time, working through something, not
necessarily proclaiming authority, and
often resisting the intentions of the
original author. For the moment, jazz
is playing — no melody, only notes in a
myriad of tiny jolts — with an abrupt
manner, in which it thrusts itself
forward like a cliff against the sea,
onward to infinity.
