Although Brian Eno’s contributions to music (and creative endeavors in general) are as diverse as they are influential, he is celebrated today largely for his pioneering work in ambient music (of his nine albums rated 5-star by AllMusic, almost half are not ambient).

Historically speaking, one of the most significant works by any artist is his fourth full album, Another Green World, which straddles the fence between ambient sounds and conventional songs, like nothing before it and nothing afterward.

The Album

Strictly speaking, Another Green World is not an ambient work to be played in the background or to merge with other sounds in the listener’s environment (like Eno’s Discreet Music from the same year). Although the works developed from improvisation by the players, the final result includes several fairly conventional songs not typical of the “Golden Hour” music in this series (though one song is titled “Golden Hours”). I’ve chosen three of the most relaxing works; a number of the instrumentals are too sinister to be classified as relaxing OR even “dark ambient.” Still, to appreciate the complex genius of Another Green World, the entire album should be consumed in a single, uninterrupted sitting (except for…
