It’s not what I saw but how I felt

Another tough challenge laid down by Noah Levy. What’s your favorite live show of all time? Here’s his write-up here.

I’m going to cheat on this one. I’ve been to so many concerts, festivals, and live gigs that it’s almost impossible to settle on one. Here are a few of my faves in no particular order: Supergrass in Portsmouth, Nirvana and L7 at Reading Festival, Bjork at Glastonbury Festival, Perry Farrell and Porno for Pyros, Charlatans, Chemical Brothers, and the incredible Prince!

But the one gig that comes back to me over and over again is one I can only recall in patches. I was at the highest I’ve ever been and a complete wreck. The vibe was surreal and everyone around me was super loved up.

It was 1993. I was living in some backwater in South Wales called Llanelli. My journey to the valleys of Wales was the result of poor application to study and a need to get as far away as possible from my family. I longed for adventure and desperately wanted to go to university in Manchester. Unfortunately, when my interviewer asked if I got on with my tutors, I knew the gig was up. My former tutor detested me and I’m sure his report was less than favorable.
