My Top 10 Best of 2023 Pop Culture Lists
Technically it isn’t December 31 yet, but I’ve already compiled my Obama-style year-end recap of the best in movies and music. Except mine also has boob tube reccos instead of books, hee hee.
Goodreads says I did indeed read at least 10 books this year, but the thing is, (1) none except for one (Jose Andres’ The World Central Kitchen Cookbook) were properly from 2023, and (2) most of them were graphic novels and even then I skimmed those since I already watched the TV series that was based on them (Trese on NFLX).
One of my 2023 reads was a Cliff Notes type of study guide for kids who have to read Watership Down for literature class. I never read the actual book or watched the movie, but Simon Dillon reminded me of it when he talked about scary children’s movies (you can read my entry to his writing prompt here wherein I discuss another movie that most scared me as a child).
I still don’t think I will track down Watership Down online to watch it, though, because I do not find rabbits and other similar woodland and household creatures to be adorable or cuddly at all.¹ But the story is a quite moving and powerful allegorical tale.
