Review: “Caprisongs” Shows FKA Twigs At Her Most Faceted

The January mixtape from the British songstress displays more of her personality and genre-bending sound.

With 2022 winding down, I wanted to go back and look at a few albums I didn’t review earlier in the year.

Going way back to this past January, British singer-songwriter FKA Twigs made major waves with her mixtape Caprisongs, and upon hearing it, I immediately understood why.

FKA Twigs is a fascinating figure in modern music. Performance is in her blood, as she spent the majority of her youth studying everything from opera to ballet to music. Her skills as a dancer would net her appearances in several music videos for other artists in the early 2010s, including Jessie J, Kylie Minogue, and Ed Sheeran. All the while, Twigs worked on her own original songs, which she self-released on Bandcamp.

Buzz from her first EP caught the attention of the British record label Young, who paired her with Venezuelan experimental producer extraordinaire Arca. The two largely created her second EP and studio debut, which are incredible and unique projects that rightly received critical acclaim for their forward-thinking blend of pop, R&B, and electronic.
