What do you do as an artist when you lose the instrument that makes you successful? The D.O.C. was faced with that adversity months after dropping his debut album but didn’t let that stop him from having a fulfilling career.
While his trajectory in the music industry changed, he continued to work behind the scenes writing some of hip hop’s most iconic songs. He didn’t let a life-changing event derail what he had worked so hard for.
Although he isn’t the solo star he was destined to be, The D.O.C. is an important name in the story of hip hop. My awareness of him came through my interest in researching production.
Part of the fun of buying CDs in the 90s and early 2000s was for the liner notes. I wanted to see who produced what songs and read lyrics if they were included.
When I bought Dr. Dre’s The Chronic 2001, I noticed the name “The D.O.C.,” in the credits for several songs.
