I have been listening to them forever; they have always been there. Likely, I heard some on the radio, especially Satisfaction, in the early days. Even though I was a punk/post-punk kid, they were the acceptable wild side of mainstream rock.

I recall the elder brother returning from varsity as a convert and playing some Stones, and osmosis then took over. The crunch guitars of ‘It’s Only Rock n Roll’ seeped in. Since then, I have listened a bit, ignored them a lot, come back from time to time. Recently I was completing a 60s/70s playlist and delved back in deeply, then when I got to the 80/90s there was a major patch I had missed. There were a few good rockers found that would be good to throw over to another list.

It was fun to listen, re-discover, uncover some gems, skip some. This list is based on the British album listing commonly found and covers everything the US market repackaging of singles, EPs, and albums did in the early days before it all became one again by the late sixties.

There are, of course, some tough choices to get to: either whittle down to three or, in some places, just get to three. My criteria are simply songs I like and want to listen to again. To close out, there is a quick tour of those who dared to cover the works of the…
