When you think of electronic music in the 1990s, Daft Punk or Aphex Twin come to mind. The Prodigy or DJ Shadow may also come to mind. Matmos will not be mentioned, however. The San Francisco and Baltimore duo have been active since 1996, and there is no sign of them stopping.

Matmos gained a large fan base during this time and pushed the boundaries of music. This was the case with their 2006 release. It was a gift to their idols — one that they could admire.

Welcome to the twenty-third entry in the Weird Albums Series. Today’s album is Matmo’s 2006 LP, The Rose Has Teeth in the Mouth of a Beast. I’ll abbreviate the title a few times in the article.

In the Weird Albums Series, I discuss albums beyond typical music structures. In each installment, I discuss the album’s background, my thoughts, and the legacy. Then, I rate the album using the Beefheartian scale.

It’s a rating system invented by experimental music enthusiasts to describe albums similar to Captain Beefheart. For example, a ten on the rating system means, “Hot damn, that’s weird!”
