I have been inspired by some fellow The Riff writers to try out this song covers challenge. While some great covers have already been shared, a few others sprang to my mind, and then a few more, and here we are!

Elliott Smith: “Waterloo Sunset,” The Kinks

Picking just one Elliott Smith cover is almost impossible. His inherent musicianship and perfectionism meant his respect for the songs he covered always shone through.

His covers of John Lennon’s “Jealous Guy,” Big Star’s “Thirteen,” and many others are amazing. The dreamily emotive lyrics of Ray Davies’ 1967 classic “Waterloo Sunset” are a natural fit for this very much missed confessional songwriter.

Dinosaur Jr., Just Like Heaven (The Cure)

The influential 90s alternative rock band reinvented The Cure classic while simultaneously paying punky homage to it. Apparently, it is Robert Smith’s favorite cover too! I love the death metal-ish solo; it cracks me up…
