PJ Harvey has stated in numerous interviews that she has no desire to repeat the same territory that she treaded before.

I totally understand this, as once an idea is complete, you want to move on to the next. The inklings of her next project began during her 2003 three-piece band tour. The simplicity of this sound gave her pause to embark on a more garage/grunge-oriented album.

Harvey stated that after the glossy, sleek sound of Stories from the City, Stories from the Sea, she wanted to go as far in the other direction as possible. This time Polly would take the helm of record producer and play nearly all instruments on each track. What came forth was the playful and, at times, sentimental Uh Huh Her.

“Some people do think it’s a very dark, angry, sad, melancholic record and I don’t feel that. I feel like you. I find it very beautiful and very gentle and quite hopeful and quite funny in places and a lot of people only see the dark stuff there.”
